CALC is partnering with the Rural Organizing Project (ROP) and Oregon Law Center in a lawsuit against the City of Cottage Grove and its Police Department, to insist on Oregon’s Sanctuary Promise Act. The Act is not being followed and it is important that the police department is held accountable. Rural Organizing Project writes a brief description of the act and its history in Oregon:

“Back in 1987, Oregon was the first state in the country to pass a Sanctuary Law to protect human rights by making it illegal for local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration policies. Since then, Oregonians have overwhelmingly supported our state’s sanctuary law. Working together in 2018, we handily defeated Ballot Measure 105, an effort by the national anti-immigrant Right to repeal the law. In 2021, we passed the Sanctuary Promise Act to strengthen Oregon’s Sanctuary Laws. Thanks to the hard work of community leaders, including rural human dignity groups, Oregon now has the strongest sanctuary policies in the entire country! Learn more about the Sanctuary Promise Act in Action here.”

This is the first time CALC has participated in a lawsuit, so it is a big deal and we wanted to share this news with all of you. We decided to take a stance and participate in this lawsuit, because it is unjust and illegal for local law enforcement to aid federal immigration officers with deportation of community members. CALC cares about this topic, because not only is it a social justice, but also a legal issue that needs to be addressed. In order for the citizens of Cottage Grove to feel safe going to doctor’s appointments, seeking public services, and above all living in their communities, the Sanctuary Promise Act must be upheld. Stay tuned for more updates of CALC’s involvement in this lawsuit and the status. You can visit the ROP or Oregon Law Center websites for more information.
