Committee for Countering Military Recruitment (CCMR)The Committee for Countering Military Recruitment (CCMR) provides young people in schools throughout Lane County with accurate information regarding military service. The focus is on the low-income, rural, and youth of color targeted by military recruiters. Those considering military service need more complete information than that provided by military recruiters to make informed decisions about a matter as important as their career.CCMR works to protect youth privacy. Under the No Child Left Behind Act, schools are required to provide information about their students to military recruiters unless they opt out. The Pentagon has a data base on all youth, male & female, age 16 through 25. CCMR works to inform students and parents about actions to take to enhance privacy. Call 485-1755 option 2 for more information about this program which is a joint project with Eugene PeaceWorks.

Progressive Responses (PR)Progressive Responses (PR): Through community forums, rallies, grassroots lobbying and media work, PR challenges U.S. foreign policy in Iraq and elsewhere, addresses the root causes of international conflicts, opposes the assault on civil liberties, pushes for the development of non-military approaches to stopping conflict, and mobilizes people to hold public officials accountable. On March 17 the 4th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, 2500 loud, spirited people paraded through the streets of Eugene from the Lane County Fairgrounds to the Eugene Federal Building for a ”Bring the Troops Home Now” rally organized by CALC and the other members of the Take Back America Coalition. Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect (SAfER)SAfER has significantly influenced the Springfield School District to move toward a school environment in which students, staff, and parents feel safe, respected and valued. SAfER pressure resulted in the creation of three multicultural liaison positions, an increase in funds and services for English Language Learners, and a functioning diversity committee. SAfER is the lead organization for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. student art, essay and poetry contest and celebration. Last year 300 people attended and 650 students participated in the contest. This year's (Jan 2006) participation exceeded our expectations - 1036 students submitted entries in art, essays, poetry or persuasive speech. The auditorium was filled to capacity and over 100 students from different school choirs performed. SAfER initiated a Cesar Chavez Commemoration involving high school Latino groups. The event helped build student self-esteem, and built bridges across ethnic lines.
