Community Alliance of Lane County (CALC) is seeking someone to join our development team on a half-time basis. The person hired will become part of an organization that has been working for social change for 50 years, and must have a demonstrated commitment to peace and social justice. The Development and Fundraising part of the job involves helping to implement and expand all aspects of a diverse and healthy fundraising plan. Expanding and deepening CALC’s major gifts program will be the focus of the job. A successful applicant must be willing to approach individuals directly for financial support. Training and mentoring in face-to-face fundraising will be provided, but a willingness to ask for money is essential.
The Volunteer Coordination aspect of the job will involve recruiting, orienting, scheduling and appreciating a diverse pool of volunteers and interns. CALC’s 2016 50th Anniversary will produce many volunteer opportunities and a strong volunteer base will ensure CALC’s effectiveness into the future. Recruiting youth and young adults to participate actively in CALC will be a priority, as will identifying senior volunteers with flexible schedules.
Fundraising and Development Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in regular meetings with other members of CALC’s development team. This involves helping to plan and implement all aspects of CALC’s fundraising.
- Maintain positive relationships with current CALC members and supporters.
- Identify potential new financial supporters and/or encourage members to increase their financial support for CALC by becoming pledgers or major donors.
- Schedule personal visits with current or potential donors who have the capacity to make generous gifts. This involves:
- Gathering information about donors, their particular interests and relationship to CALC and/or other organizations with overlapping interests and values
- Reaching them by letter, email or phone
- Securing visits
- Meeting with the individuals, alone or with other members of the board or staff
- Sending personal appeals and cogent updates to donors who are unwilling to meet or who do not live in the area
- Directly requesting financial support
- Keeping excellent records
- Making sure to thank contributors promptly
Volunteer Coordinator Job Responsibilities:
- Work with program staff and consultants to develop job descriptions for volunteers and interns (e.g.tabling at program events, soliciting donations for events, joining a program task force to help plan and implement projects and campaigns, being part of a rapid response team).
- Work with administrative staff to cover office volunteer opportunities (e.g.mailings, phoning for events and donations, answering the phone during staff meetings or when the office administrator is busy).
- Use the CALC data base and CALC events to identify and expand a diverse pool of CALC volunteers.
- Make presentations to college and university classes about volunteer and intern opportunities.
- Keep a log of volunteers, detailing their interests, expertise and availability.
- Hold periodic volunteer orientation and appreciation luncheons or other volunteer events. Build volunteer appreciation into CALC’s visible community presence.
Note: Specific projects needing volunteers will include maximizing the use of CALC’s four traveling photo exhibits, as well as various events related to CALC’s 50th anniversary, including a youth mural project, a summer open house, creating a powerpoint about CALC’s history, and organizing a gala anniversary event next fall.
As part of CALC’s staff team, the person hired will participate in staff meetings, prepare staff reports and work plans, attend CALC Board meetings or trainings as relevant, and support CALC events.

Compensation, Probationary Period, and Benefits:
This half-time position offers a starting pay of $12 per hour for a six-month probationary period. Following a positive six-month evaluation, the pay will increase to $14 per hour. Benefits include paid vacation time and health insurance.
