Once again, Memorial Day approaches and still our nation is at war. Even as we remember and honor the sacrifices of generations of American women and men of every race, color, ethnicity and belief, we are appalled by the costs of war--for members of our armed forces, for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, and for all of us here at home. National media reports say we are angry, divided and confused. Are we? Here at CALC, we are not confused--and we don’t think you are either. Enough! This is a national crisis! We must stop investing the resources of this country--our young men and women, our money, our moral integrity--on war. Yes, let’s honor those who have served our nation in uniform. Let’s honor them by building a country which provides excellent education, health care, a clean environment, good jobs and social justice, for our returning troops, us, and for future generations to come.
Please join us in sending a message that is loud and clear by responding to the petition below and even better ask your friends to sign as well. We’ll publish the text as a signature ad in the Register-Guard on Memorial Day. Please respond before our May 22nd deadline. You can respond in a couple of ways:
And please make a generous tax-deductible donation to Community Alliance of Lane County. We’ll use the first $5 of your contribution to help pay for the ad, and the rest to fund CALC’s persistent work for peace and social justice. You can give online or mail a check to CALC.

President Obama issued an executive order banning torture. Will that alone end our use of torture forever? And what do we really believe about "harsh interrogation" methods? Come learn more and discuss your ideas as we join with members from various congregations for this important dialogue. Discussion leaders from Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon will present an 18-minute video from the National Religious Campaign Against Torture on "Ending US-Sponsored Torture Forever." This video features religious leaders, interrogators, legal experts, and torture survivors who believe torture is always wrong. Then we'll discuss how we can respond faithfully to this timely issue, talking about both the ethics of using torture and some steps to take in ending it. Kevin Finney, the Public Policy Director for Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon will lead the session. Local anti-torture activists from the Lane County area will also share information about their local work.
The AmeriCorp member will assist staff and take lead roles in developing and organizing positive healthy opportunities for youth, families and communities in a variety of activities in diverse settings, including the Safe Schools Network, advocating dignity and respect in the schools for Lesbian/ Gay/ Bisexual/Transgender/Questioning students, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Essay and Art Contest and celebration, the youth-led bi-lingual Cesar Chavez Commemoration, the Queer Youth Art Project and the Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance and the Human Rights Harvest. Immigration Reform and Workers’ Rights Now: Si Se Puede!
Come to a Unity March in Salem, OR on May 1st, 2009, 11AM – 3PM, fighting for just immigration reform, drivers’ license restoration, and jobs and just wages for everyone.
In 1889 Raymond Lavigne at the Second International Congress called for May 1st to be an international day for workers rights as a commemoration of the 1886 Chicago Haymarket Massacre when police fired on workers striking for an 8 hour day. In 2006, it took on new meaning in the U.S. when over 1.5 million people protested (one of the largest protests in U.S. history) in response to immigrant groups calling for a national day of action against House Resolution 4437, which would have criminalized those who assist undocumented immigrants as "alien smugglers" and turned undocumented status from a civil violation to a federal aggravated felony.
In current economic situation of 2009, the two identities of May Day as a day for Workers’ Rights and a day for Immigrants’ Rights are coming together. As ROP (the Rural Organizing Project) states: “Right now, there are 12 million undocumented people in the US. Companies LOVE this kind of worker, one that will work for low wages with no benefits, agree to be paid under the table, endure egregious workers’ rights violations and abuse in the workplace, and still be unlikely to fight for a union. This is a large sector of the workforce that essentially has no ability to organize or to enforce their rights. So what is the result on the entire workforce of having this group of folks? You tell me . . . lower wages? With no benefits? Less ability to organize? So let’s get workers on the same page, united, and then lets fight for some workers rights!

CALC and Eugene PeaceWorks are co-sponsors of the statewide campaign to pass legislation de-federalizing the Guard and keeping them home, but we need your help to push it along. Contact your State Representative on Guard Home legislation!
Oregon has a good chance of being the first state in the nation to pass legislation that would empower the Governor to keep our National Guard from deployment when there is no valid federal authority to do so.
In order to get our bill (HB 2556) heard in the legislature, we need to be sure we have enough votes to pass it once it gets out of the House Rules Committee. We are just a few votes away in the Oregon House from that goal.
We are asking you to make that extra call today to 1-800-332-2313, and/or to send a copy of the E-Letter to your representative to put us over the top.
If you do not know who your legislator is, you can look them up here:

If you hear back from your legislator, please let us know.
